(1)    Individualizing Protocols ~~ with David Hoffmann

selection criteria will be discussed and a protocol applied to sample case histories.  This class is
        intended for the advanced students.

(2)    Treating Cancer with Herbs ~~ with Michael Tierra
Treatment of cancer based on the Six Methods of TCM offers a highly practical method for creating
the most powerful anticancer herbal formulas specified to 1) the presentation and constitution of the
patient, 2) the type of cancer and 3) integration with other therapies including conventional western
therapies such as chemotherapy, radiation and/or surgery.  An herbal formula used in this way can be
implemented as either a primary treatment of the disease or secondarily to other approaches.  It can
and should also be modified and adopted for use at a lower dosage to be used long term for the
        prevention and recurrence of cancer.

(3)    Living on the Edge: Stress and the Endocrine System ~~ with Phyllis Light
The sympathetic and parasympathetic responses mediate the interaction between the endocrine,

The lines, colors, blemishes, the various temperatures and other conditions appearing on the exterior
of the body to give hints as to interior conditions.  Understanding the cues of the organ/body
correspondences is a precious gift (and a curse).  Indications of hot, cold, damp, dry and wind conditions
can easily be read once you train your eyes to see.  This will be an interactive class.  Do not wear

Traditionally herbal medicine has almost always been effected in concert with other
forms of healing, be it Earth energy or Spiritual.  With the separation of Church and
State, we also had a separation of body from mind.  This class will offer insights into
how you, as an clinician, can increase your success by using simple forms of energy

Doctrine of Signatures, Wisdom of Nature, and Intuitive Thinking as a Spiritual Path
                                                       ~~Matthew Wood~~
Through the intuition we learn to see the patterns and resonances in Nature,
between plant and disease, plant and organ, plant and humanity.  These resonances
are called 'signatures'.  As we learn to think intuitively we gain wisdom of the inner
workings and relationships inside Nature.  Most importantly, intuitive thinking
constitutes a spiritual path, as taught by Rudolf Steiner, which allows us to see the
essence in others and in Nature, and to develop the essence or individuality within
                        ourselves.

                                                            Differentiating Diaphoretics
                                                                 ~~Jim McDonald~~
While people commonly think of diaphoretics as "herbs to use during fevers to
make you sweat", this is a limited understanding of an immensely important class of
herbs that is as, if not possibly more, important than other classes of immune herbs
that boost white blood cell production or kill microbes.  Join Jim McDonald in an
exploration of the fundamental role of diaphoretics in immunity, and how they can be
used to support and enhance the body's vital response to infections from influenza
to the common cold.  Special attention will be paid to the differentiation and use of
diaphoretics that stimulate, relax, or do both at once.

                        base saturation.

                                                          Starting a Clinical Practice
                                                     ~~Amanda McQuade Crawford~~
How do you become an herbalist?  Practice!  Knowing oneself is more important than
any of the following when defining what you need for a fully operational practice.
Many practitioners from varying schools of medicine or learning paths complete their
education and then start learning the craft on the job.  Having started successful
practices in new locations each time I moved, I know what mistakes to avoid.  Find
out how you can be justly rewarded for sharing your herb knowledge in a way that is

hearts, herbs that are diuretic, effective and safe treatments for hypertension, and clear up
cholesterol confusion and answer whether garlic does or does not work.  recent research on
plaques of atherosclerosis have been found to contain bacteria and fungi as co-inflammatory
triggers.  Why do our anti-inflammatory and antiseptic herbs meet the needs of a growing
population of elders?  Take heart. Herbs come to the rescue.

Your Work Room is More than Just Herbs and Bottles
                                                                                                          ~~Victoria Fortner~~
There is no arguing that herbs are a gift from the Earth, and with them carry the energy of
the Earth.  This class will look at several indigenous herbal traditions and their associated ,
spiritual components, while translating it all into current scientific terms.  Applications of
these methods will be discussed so that you may incorporate them into your still room and
                                        lab.

                                                                                                                 Headaches
                                                                                                         ~~Lesley Tierra~~
When treating headaches in the West we use herbs such as feverfew or rosemary.  Yet, these
herbs don't work for every situation so we may or may not receive relief.  In TCM there
are more than five different types of headaches and each is treated differently.  Further, a
headache is seen as a signal of an underlying imbalance.  Learn how to treat these different
types of headaches effectively with herbs, foods, and lifestyle approaches.

                                                                                                     Surviving Sinusitis
                                                                                                    ~~Jim McDonald~~
Allergies, infections and chronic inflammation of the sinuses are common maladies many
people struggle with.  While most conventional treatment involve antibiotics, suppressive
drugs and sometime surgery.  Many common herbs can effectively restore health and tone
the sinuses and ease discomfort.  Herbalist Jim McDonald will elaborate on how to choose
among these plants, and discuss other therapies that can give relief to sinus suffering.

                                                                                                        ~~Michael Tierra~~
Are you yin or yang?  The Eight Principles is the foundation for all other Traditional Chinese
Medical systems of diagnosis.  The remarkable thing is that the Eight Principles forms the
most basic and yet the most essential level of understanding for all systems and methods
of disgnosis and can be easily incorporated into the practice of Ayurvedic Medicine,  Western
herbal medicine and even contemporary Western allopathic medicine. The Eight Principles
serves as an energetic basis for the diagnosis and treatment both of one's constitution as well
as specific disease imbalances.  By employing it, one can achieve greater efficacy and safety in
treatment - even to the use of conventional medicine.

Foods and Herbs for Children's Health
                                                                                                     ~~Lesley Tierra~~
Children's illnesses are particularly responsive to herbal treatment.  There are a number of
very safe, effective herbs that effectively treat illnesses more common to children.  Many of
these actually grow as weeds and/or can be found in most gardens and kitchens.  In treating
children, however, it is necessary to address diet as well since poor food choices ae one of the
most frequent causes of children's aliments.  Further, it's important to learn ways to support
and increase children's immunity to enhance prevention of illnesses in the first place
                                    whenever  possible.

                                                                                                          ~~David Hoffmann~~
The use of medicinal plants is a common thread throughout the world.  Herbalism offers a

including the peer reviewed clinic, to illuminating the ecology of humanities place in nature.
In a world almost drained of the resources modern medicine is dependant on, herbalism can
become a major contributin to sustainable health care.  In this talk we will look at ways
herbalism might offer a sustainable future in supporting effective healing protocols,
maintain a diverse environment and contribute to economically viable communities.

Essential Oils - The Soul of Nature or Dangerous Toxins?
                                                                                                                 ~~Mindy Green~~
The controversy surrounding essential oils has sparked some fierce debate - are they the
answer to the new super bugs, the path to enlightenment or dangerously harmful
substances?  Paracelsus said, "The right dose differentiates a poison from a remedy."  Four
hundred years later the subject of safety, dosage and application of these aromatic
compounds has resulted in diverse opinions, even in the complementary care community.
What about skin sensitivities, toxicity and safety issues?  Are 'Rain Drop Therapy' and 'live
embalming' safe techniques?  How are absorption rates affected?  What about neat
application, internal routes or oral application?  Should we use homeopathic or heroic
dosing?  What about the ecological impact?  We will explore these and many more
contentious issues about essential oil therapies through looking at the history, exploring the
chemistry, and searching the literature (or lack there of) as we strive to find a reasonable
approach to using these fragrant botanicals as integrative therapeutic tools.
